Before the universe began it was thought there existed a disordered state of unformed matter and infinite space. Spiritually therefore in dreams chaos is a representation of source and the beginning of all things. There is, though, an underlying pattern, which may not be immediately apparent.
Most dreams in which there is a liquid being churned, boiled or made to move in some way link back to a very primitive sense of chaos (lack of order). This indicates we may need to reassess our creative abilities to make use of the energy available to us.
Ultimately, chaos must give way to order. One school of thought is that form arose out of churning the chaos. In dreams such an idea has some merit, since many dream images appear to arrive from nowhere.
That side of the personality where chaos may reign, and where, unless some spiritual understanding can be attained, is seen as dark. Also darkness is full of mystery and part of the unknown, the obscurity which hides the divine.
The dragon is traditionally the guardian of power. The original of all dragons was a version of the serpent tiamat goddess of chaos and darkness. In conquering the dragon, spiritually we become custodians of our own future.
